First year experience
First Year Experience (FYE) is a required course that functions as an extension of orientation, designed to aid the transition to the university and to prepare students for academic excellence, professional careers, and life after graduation. The course is taught by a member of a student’s SCAD Circle, comprised of supportive staff across the university like student success advisers, career and alumni success advisers, counseling and student support services personnel, and others who support, encourage, and provide resources to help students excel and thrive. A variety of topics — like university resources and support, personal branding, wellness, growth mindset and resiliency, financial wellbeing, and professionalism — are introduced and exemplified through lectures, group discussions, and class activities. The FYE course meets for one hour, once per week and is not designed to compete with any other coursework. It is a pass/fail course and there is no tuition charge.
Successful completion of FYE is a graduation requirement for first-year students.
Course goals:
- Students will learn about resources at SCAD and the transition to a university environment.
- Students will learn about various SCAD programs, events, and organizations they can participate in to help establish community and enhance their experience and career preparation.
- Students will make connections with peers and with their instructor.
- Students will share questions and concerns and receive advice to assist them in achieving a successful quarter.
Students who have transferred to SCAD from another institution are not required to complete the course but may opt to participate in the course to take advantage of the learning opportunities.
