Tree canopy: Data to design

Summer 2023

Seeking to quantify the impact of tree canopy loss on decreasing air quality in marginalized communities, a SCAD design for sustainability student surveyed local residents of the "fenceline" neighborhoods of Hudson Hill and Savannah as well as data equity experts and local community management leaders. Survey responses frequently mentioned toxic air quality and its effects on health and lifestyles, while an examination of the tree canopy percentage in each neighborhood found it well below the 50% goal for the surrounding county. The gathered responses demonstrate how data collection can inform public policy and improve quality of life on a hyperlocal scale.
