Public transportation

Summer 2023

SCAD graphic design and industrial design students surveyed respondents on how improvements to public transportation services could increase usage, in turn decreasing reliance on personal vehicles. Their research indicated that car-centric design dominates most U.S. metropolitan areas outside of the largest few: approximately 45% of Americans do not have access to mass transit, and 70% of all mass transit commuters in the U.S. live in the nation's seven largest metro areas. Survey responses and research demonstrated that modernizing amenities — offering riders multimodal compatibility, or the ability to store a bicycle, and digital solutions like apps and phone alerts — would immediately improve ridership and user trust.
