Emergency preparedness
All-hazard emergency preparedness plan
Predicting how and when crisis situations will strike is difficult, so preparation is critical. SCAD has created an all-hazard emergency preparedness plan to assist members of the SCAD community in nearly all emergencies. Many examples in the plan focus on emergency weather-related scenarios, such as hurricanes, due to the tropical climate of some SCAD locations.
Tornadoes
Be prepared for tornado season, know the difference between tornado watches and warnings, and have a plan for getting to a safe location if a warning siren goes off.
Hurricanes
When threatened by a tropical storm or hurricane, SCAD Savannah follows all procedures regarding mandatory evacuations established by local authorities.
Intruder and active shooter
Become familiar with the recommended safety tips and procedures for an intruder or active shooter emergency.
Fire, hazardous materials and building evacuations
In the event of a building fire or a hazardous material emergency, activate the nearest fire alarm, exit the building and follow the necessary safety precautions.
Suspicious person, package or substance
If you come across a suspicious person, package or substance, contact the Department of University Safety. Do not try to confront the person or disturb the item.
Civil unrest
Should find yourself in an area of civil unrest, where riots, demonstrations, threatening individuals or gatherings become disruptive, follow these guidelines to help protect your personal safety.
Emergency notifications
In the event of an emergency, SCAD utilizes a number of tools and communication channels to disseminate important information to students, faculty and staff as quickly as possible.
Closures and evacuation procedures
Students are encouraged to develop a personal evacuation plan in the event that there is an evacuation. Follow these tips to creating your plan, and know SCAD’s evacuation procedures.
SCAD collaborates for safety
The university's first priority is ensuring the safety of its students. SCAD emergency management and preparedness is aligned with federal, state and local emergency management agencies, as well as with local fire, law enforcement and other emergency first responders.
At the federal level, SCAD collaborates on emergency management and disaster planning with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. At the state level, SCAD works with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to prepare for any possible disaster. For disaster preparation at the local level, SCAD works with the Chatham Emergency Management Agency in Savannah and the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency in Atlanta.
