Summer 2023
Students from four SCAD disciplines researched how the fear of missing out (FOMO) on social media interaction contributes to rising stress and depression in young adults, propagating an addictive usage cycle. Research shows that more than 66% of teenagers and young adults active on social media are likely to suffer from depression. Student researchers from advertising and branding, industrial design, service design, and social strategy and management identified intervention practices like meditation, device time limits, and offline community building as resources to help this demographic find fulfillment without needing to fully disconnect from social networks.
