Fashion sustainability insights for retailers

Under the guidance of SCAD industrial design professor Chunshik Kim, SCAD students conducted research to support sustainability efforts in the fashion industry. Their research showed that consumers looked for longevity and quality in their purchasing choices. The research also indicated that consumers believed in fashion sustainability and efforts to repurpose clothing for the disadvantaged, though a majority were unaware of upcycling and other sustainability programs. Analyzing opportunities for greater retailer awareness of customers’ behaviors and desires, students translated insights from consumers into insights for brands: making retail recycling transparent and easy, emphasizing longevity in clothing, and promoting upcycling initiatives, among others.
More research
SCADask generates timely research at the intersection of commerce, creativity, and culture. With a purpose of educating the public with new insights on trending topics as well as elevating SCAD as the preeminent source of knowledge in the disciplines we teach, SCADask equips external partners to address a wide range of emergent business opportunities. Under the supervision of qualified university leaders, SCADask identifies, formulates, and tackles research questions that are relevant to SCAD disciplines and appealing to a general interest audience. The qualitative and quantitative results and strategic insights produced from SCADask research synthesize existing knowledge from SCAD programs and new research assignments with external partners.
