Wild Rose

Canada/UK/USA | 101 min. | 2018
1:30 p.m.
Theatre du SCAD

The free-spirited Rose-Lynn Harlan (Jessie Buckley) has dreamed of country music stardom for as long as she can remember. But while her heart beats to the rhythms of Nashville, her reality is rooted in Glasgow. Recently released from prison and raising two young children, her life feels more like the lyrics of a country song than the spotlight of the Grand Ole Opry. Barred from returning to her old gig at Glasgow’s own “Grand Ole Opry,” Rose-Lynn takes a job as a housekeeper, only to discover an unexpected champion of her Music City dreams. What follows is an uplifting journey of redemption, ambition, and identity as Rose-Lynn decides whether chasing the music can also mean finding her way back to herself. With a dazzling, powerhouse performance by Buckley and a soundtrack of soaring songs, this irresistible film captures the spirit and grit of classic country storytelling — full of heart, hope, and emotional truth.

Producer Faye Ward will introduce the screening. A panel featuring Ward and producer Alison Owen immediately follows the screening.

In Conversation with Sir Stephen Frears and Sir Christopher Hampton

8:30 p.m.
Maison Basse Lawn

Join two true titans of British cinema, Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning director Sir Stephen Frears (The Grifters, The Queen) and Oscar and Tony Award-winning screenwriter Sir Christopher Hampton (Atonement, The Father), ahead of a special screening of their iconic film Dangerous Liaisons. Adapted by Hampton from his own Tony Award-winning play and masterfully brought to the screen by Frears, Dangerous Liaisons is a sumptuous, razor-sharp tale of seduction, power, and betrayal set in pre-revolutionary France.

Together, Frears and Hampton will reflect on the making of the film, its enduring legacy, and their celebrated careers spanning stage and screen. From the intricacies of adapting an 18th century epistolary novel to working with a luminous cast that included Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Keanu Reeves, and Uma Thurman, this conversation promises rare insight into one of the most dazzling and diabolical period dramas ever made.

USA | 119 min. | 1988
8:30 p.m.
Maison Basse Lawn

Set against the opulent world of 18th century French aristocracy, Stephen Frears’ Dangerous Liaisons is a deliciously devious adaptation of Christopher Hampton’s acclaimed stage play, itself based on the classic novel by Choderlos de Laclos. The film follows the twisted machinations of two former lovers — Glenn Close as the cunning Marquise de Merteuil and John Malkovich as the seductive Vicomte de Valmont — who conspire to manipulate, seduce, and ruin those around them, including the virtuous Madame de Tourvel, played by Michelle Pfeiffer in an Academy Award-nominated performance. Nominated for seven Oscars — winning for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Art Direction — this tale of power, betrayal, and erotic gamesmanship electrifies with its razor-sharp wit, sumptuous visuals, and unforgettable performances.

The screening is preceded by an In Conversation event with director Stephen Frears and writer Christopher Hampton.

Presented in English with French subtitles.

Dior & I (Dior et moi)

France | 90 mins. | 2014
2 p.m.
Theatre du SCAD

Frédéric Tcheng’s Dior & I is an intimate and enthralling behind-the-scenes portrait of one of the most storied fashion houses in the world. Presented in conjunction with the SCAD FASH Lacoste exhibition Christian Dior: Jardins Rêvés, this visually sumptuous documentary offers unprecedented access to the House of Dior during a pivotal moment in its modern history: the arrival of visionary designer Raf Simons as its newly appointed creative director. With a sharp and observant eye, Tcheng captures the intense eight-week journey leading up to Simons’ first haute couture show for the house, weaving together past and present as Simons draws inspiration from Dior’s legacy while forging his own path. Hailed by critic Daphne Merkin as “simply the best film about fashion I’ve seen,” the film moves fluidly between the extraordinary artistry of the atelier’s master seamstresses and the high-stakes glamour of Paris fashion. Dior & I reveals the emotional and creative labor behind every stitch, resulting in a film as elegant and intoxicating as the garments themselves.

A conversation with director Frédéric Tcheng will follow the screening.

Ticketholders also enjoy complimentary admission to Christian Dior: Jardins Rêvés at SCAD FASH Lacoste. Guided tours will be available after the screening from 4–5 p.m.

Presented in French and English with English subtitles.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter et le Prisonnier d'Azkaban)

UK/USA | 142 min. | 2004
8:30 p.m.
Maison Basse Lawn

Harry Potter’s third cinematic adventure, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, marked a bold artistic turning point for the blockbuster film franchise. With visionary director Alfonso Cuarón taking the helm and costume designer Jany Temime beginning what would become a six-film tenure, the series took on a more mature, stylized, and emotionally resonant tone. Returning for his third year at Hogwarts, Harry finds himself not only having to contend with a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, but also Dementors guarding the school grounds and whispers of escaped convicted murder Sirius Black’s approach. Presenting a darker, more mysterious, and infinitely more complex Wizarding World, Prisoner of Azkaban has frequently been hailed by fans and critics alike as the finest installment in the series. A spell of emotional depth, artistic reinvention, and magical storytelling, this chapter redefined what a Harry Potter film could be.

Costume designer Jany Temime will be presented with the Etoile Award. A conversation with Temime will precede the screening.

Presented in English with French subtitles.

Stephen Frears

Lifetime Achievement in Directing Award

Unanimously regarded as one of Britain's finest directors, Stephen Frears has always embraced a wide variety of styles, themes, and genres. He turned to cinema in the mid-1980s on films like The Hit and My Beautiful Laundrette, the latter of which crossed over to big-screen audiences and altered the course of his career. Moving on to Hollywood, his films Dangerous Liaisons and The Grifters — which earned him his first Academy Award nomination — became among the most notable of his career. He received a second Oscar nomination for 2006’s The Queen. His other film credits include the BAFTA-winning Philomena, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, Prick Up Your Ears, The Snapper, The Van, The Hi-Lo Country, High Fidelity, Dirty Pretty Things, Mrs Henderson Presents, The Program, Florence Foster Jenkins, Victoria & Abdul, and The Lost King.
