Fashion on Film: A Cinematic Celebration of Iconic SCAD Exhibitions

2 p.m.
Theatre du SCAD | La Maison Basse

Enjoy a collection of highly acclaimed, award-winning SCAD short films celebrating the exhibitions of famed designers Oscar de la Renta, Pierre Cardin, and Isabel Toledo in this showcase hosted by SCAD FASH creative director Rafael Gomes.

Presented in English with French subtitles.

Ovation for Oscar | 21 min.

Produced by SCAD with Compadres in Cahoots, the documentary Ovation for Oscar chronicles the creation of the exhibition Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style as it was prepared exclusively for the SCAD Museum of Art by André Leon Talley. This intimate look behind the scenes of the exhibition reveals the nuances and sophistication of the demanding, deadline-oriented work of fashion photographers, white-gloved art handlers, and discerning curators as they research, assess, mount, and produce a major museum exhibition honoring the late designer and cultural icon. Executive produced by SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace and presented by SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film, Ovation for Oscar is directed by SCAD alumnus Ryan Curtis (B.F.A., film and television, 2013). A collaboration among more than 20 SCAD students and alumni, the film represents one of many unique channels through which SCAD champions their work and careers.

Le Futur | 12 min.

SCAD produced the animated film Le Futur as a tribute to the storied life and career of fashion designer and longtime Lacoste resident Pierre Cardin. Executive produced by SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace and directed by Matthew Miller, Le Futur sets Cardin's fascinating tale in motion, giving life to his sensational rise to global acclaim. Cardin reflects on his métier joined by Wallace, who has shared many intimate moments with Cardin over the years in which he has offered sage reflections on the creative process and the future of design. Cultural and fashion leaders, including André Leon Talley, Jean Paul Gaultier, Maryse Gaspard, and Jim Bittermann add enriching detail as they recount how Cardin transformed the world with his avant-garde sensibility and prescient vision. The film is a true passion project for SCAD and for Wallace, born from a decades-long friendship with Cardin and tended by his heartfelt engagement with students, alumni, and communities at SCAD.

Echoes and Vibrations | 14 min.

Produced in conjunction with the SCAD FASH Lacoste exhibition Isabel Toledo: A Love LetterEchoes and Vibrations is the remarkable story of the beloved Cuban-born American fashion designer Isabel Toledo as told by her husband and lifelong collaborator, Ruben Toledo. Chronicling a life shared in the joy of creation, renowned artist and fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo remembers his wife, muse, and collaborator — and also a global superstar fashion designer and style icon — in a tender, sizzling homage to her divine genius. Witness the Toledos' ascent to the height of their careers, when First Lady Michelle Obama wore a lemongrass Isabel Toledo ensemble to President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration, catapulting the designer to global recognition and acclaim. Marvel at the potential for creative renewal among the depths of grief as Ruben reflects on Isabel's untimely death in 2019 — and cheer as he perseveres in his life's dedication to amplifying her work and ensuring her legacy will never be forgotten.

'Breathless' and a Tribute to Jean-Luc Godard

4 p.m.
Theatre du SCAD | La Maison Basse

It is no exaggeration to say the late Jean-Luc Godard did nothing less than reinvent cinema when he burst onto the scene with 1960's Breathless, his jazzy tribute to American B movies.

As film critic J. Hoberman put it, "there’s Potemkin, Citizen Kane, and this…Godard's first film."

Breathless, the tale of an American student who falls for a small-time Parisian thief, helped launch French New Wave. With its freeform innovations and revolutionary jump-cuts, the film remains among cinema's most influential. Breathless is not only a defining work of cinematic style — its enduring influence also extends to the realm of fashion, epitomizing a cool and effortless French style that continues to inspire designers and inhabit our imaginations. From Jean-Paul Belmondo's trademark fedora to Jean Seberg's simple summery stripe dress, the film's costumes helped its stars became instant fashion icons by taking preppy American style and adding a twist of French je ne sais quoi to create something as chic as it was then as it is now.

A discussion with SCAD dramatic writing professor Chris Auer immediately follows the screening.

Presented in French and English with English subtitles.

From evening gowns to office wear, fashion is at the forefront of this series, with costume designer Marylin Fitoussi's sharp sartorial sense bringing to vivid life a distinctly maximalist take on classic French elegance. Fitoussi, a master of telling stories through clothes, will discuss how she mixes vintage and thrift finds with contemporary pieces to meld Emily's quirky irreverence of Parisian flair.

Special guests

Marylin Fitoussi

As the costume designer for Netflix's Emily in Paris, Marylin Fitoussi is in her element. The Darren Star-created series has allowed Fitoussi to tap into her vast knowledge of vintage couture and deep appreciation for remixing decades. Fitoussi has worked on dozens of films and TV shows over her career, including Kaamelott: The First Chapter, one of France's biggest box office hits, and Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, where she was responsible for more than 600 costumes and the coordination between the film's costume and SFX teams.

A native of the southern French city of Toulouse, Fitoussi was born to a seamstress mother and a grandmother with a penchant for collecting clothes she never threw away. After earning a degree in textile design, she soon landed a job at the Parisian outpost of the legendary English costume rental company Angels and Bermans, working as an assistant to their designers. A chance meeting with award-winning costume designer Sylvie de Segonzac on the Paris nightclub scene led to a job at her company Les Costumes de Paris and a fruitful mentorship. Fitoussi worked on four films with de Segonzac, cultivating an extensive knowledge of period costumes.

Fitoussi's career has been a globe-spanning journey, working on film and TV projects on all seven continents. While working with Guinean director Cheik Doukourés on Le Ballon d’Or, she was mesmerized by the regal elegance of the local women's headwraps. Today, she is rarely seen without what she refers to as her turban — crafted from a tailored men's shirt — a holdover of her time in Africa given her own personal touch. Fitoussi traveled to Mexico in 1998 for the film Mon père, ma mère, mes frères et mes soeurs. Enamored by the country and the kaleidoscopic, clashing patterns of traditional huipil tunics that would become a staple of her wardrobe, she spent over a decade in Mexico City working on French and American films. She returned to Europe in 2015 for a film shot in Portugal. A nomad at heart, Fitoussi is back in Paris for now. For her, the world is truly a stage — made all the better when she's designing costumes for it.
