SCAD students designed a Mommy & Me capsule collection for Southern lifestyle brand Draper James — founded by actress and SCAD Étoile award recipient Reese Witherspoon — which launched the company into the new product category of childrenswear. This charming collection captured the spirit of the Southern mom with coordinated and complimentary outfits for mother and child. Debuting at SCAD’s spring fashion event, the Mommy & Me collection was sold through the Draper James website.

Project approach

At SCAD Savannah, students were in the perfect position to research and draw inspiration that would appeal to the Draper James clientele. Students interviewed more than 100 mothers to develop their designs and drew inspiration from Georgia’s state flower, the Cherokee Rose, its Peach State moniker and a classic Americana feel.

Working in teams focused on textile design, fashion design, marketing and accessory design, students combined their design concepts with elegant marketing solutions to present a full-concept experience that honored the Draper James spirit.

"I’m so incredibly honored to receive the SCAD Étoile and thrilled to be partnering with such a gifted and respected institution. I founded Draper James in order to showcase the originality and beauty of the South, and I’m thrilled it resonates so well with the emerging talent SCAD is known for around the world."

Project outcome

At the culmination of the collaboration, SCAD students presented a final array of textiles, outfits and accessories to Draper James leaders. After incorporating professional feedback, the team delivered a streamlined and cohesive capsule collection. The fashion marketing team developed a fashion video, event and social media features to promote Mommy & Me.

The Mommy & Me collection made its debut at SCAD’s premier spring fashion event. The collection was then featured on the official Draper James website, where student designs were available for purchase.

"Collaboration is so important to the success of this project. We had 20 different people, and everyone brought a different skill set to the table. It was about figuring out how we could have each individual shine through and capitalize on their talents. As a student, to see the payout is indescribable."
